A 2026 PMP mock exam should look like the real thing: 180 questions in 240 minutes, a case-study section first, two breaks you cannot go back past, and more than one kind of question. PMI's 2026 Exam Content Outline lists eight question types, from multiple response to matching to chart reading. A mock that only serves single-answer multiple choice trains you for an older exam. Here is what PMI actually says, what a mock can and cannot copy, and how to judge the one you are using.
Disclosure: PM Mastery sells a PMP mock exam, described near the end of this post. Every fact about the real exam here comes from PMI's 2026 PMP Examination Content Outline (ECO), available from PMI's PMP certification page, with page numbers so you can check.
What the Real 2026 Exam Looks Like
The 2026 exam went live in July with a new outline. The layout is fixed, and it is the first thing a mock has to get right.
| Element | The 2026 exam (ECO page) |
|---|---|
| Questions | 180 total: 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions (p. 17) |
| Time | 240 minutes (p. 17) |
| Breaks | Two 10-minute breaks: the first after the case-study section, the second about midway through the independent questions (p. 17) |
| Going back | Once you start a break, you cannot return to the previous section (p. 17) |
| Domains | People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26% (p. 5) |
| Approaches | About 40% predictive, 60% agile and hybrid (p. 5) |
The section layout is covered in more depth in the 2026 PMP exam structure breakdown.
The Question Types PMI Lists
The ECO names eight question types and says which delivery formats carry each one. Two are marked new for 2026.
| Type | What you do | Where it appears (ECO page) |
|---|---|---|
| Case or Scenario (new) | Read a detailed scenario, sometimes with charts, then answer a series of questions on it | All delivery formats (p. 18) |
| Graphic-Based (new) | Interpret a chart, graph, diagram or image to answer | All delivery formats (p. 19) |
| Multiple-Choice Single Response | Pick the one correct answer | All delivery formats (p. 19) |
| Multiple Response | Pick every correct answer when more than one is right | All delivery formats (p. 19) |
| Matching | Pair items from different lists by dragging them into place | Computer-based test only (p. 20) |
| Enhanced Matching | Matching with images or diagrams, such as dragging boxes onto a chart | Computer-based test only (p. 18) |
| Point and Click | Click the correct hotspot areas on an image | Computer-based test only (p. 19) |
| Pull-down List | Choose the answer from a drop-down list | Computer-based test only (p. 20) |
One line in the ECO matters for every mock on the market: the exact number of items for each question type may vary by form (p. 5). PMI does not publish how many matching or multiple-response questions you will get. Anyone who claims their mock matches PMI's exact mix is guessing.
Chart questions get their own walkthrough in graphic-based PMP questions explained.
What a Realistic Mock Gets Right
- Full length, full time. 180 questions on a 240-minute clock. Shorter sets are useful for drilling, but they do not test the stamina the real exam takes.
- The case block first. The ECO puts the first break right after the case-study section, so a realistic mock opens with case sets, not scattered single questions.
- Breaks that lock. If you can scroll back to question 12 after your first break, the mock is teaching you a habit the real exam punishes.
- More than one answer format. Multiple response and chart reading appear on every delivery format, so a mock with none of them leaves a gap. If you test at a center, matching belongs in the mix too.
- The 2026 domain split. Business Environment jumped to 26%. A mock still weighted to the old 8% under-prepares you on a quarter of the exam. The 2026 domain weights post has the full comparison.
- Explanations for every option. A score tells you where you stand. The review of why each wrong answer loses is where the improvement comes from.
What a Mock Cannot Copy
Be skeptical of any mock sold as identical to the real exam. Some things are out of reach for every provider:
- The question-type counts. They vary by form, and PMI does not publish them.
- The pretest questions. Ten of the 180 are unscored and you cannot tell which. A mock scores everything.
- PMI's scoring. PMI does not publish how it scores partial answers on multiple-response or matching items, or how a raw score becomes a result. A practice percentage is not your PMI score, which is why mock scores swing more than people expect.
- The exact interface. Drag-and-drop, hotspots and pull-downs look different in every tool. The thinking is what transfers, not the clicking.
How the PM Mastery Mock Is Built
Here is the mock we built against that outline, including where it differs from the real exam.
| Element | PM Mastery mock |
|---|---|
| Length and time | 180 questions, 240 minutes on a server-side clock, with 1.5x and 2x time options |
| Sections | 35 case-study questions (7 case studies of 5 questions), then 72, then 73 independent questions, with a 10-minute break after each of the first two sections and no going back |
| Question types | Every mock has 10 multi-select questions from a pool of 53, 2 chart-based from a pool of 12, and 2 matching from a pool of 12. The rest are single-answer multiple choice. |
| Domains | The 145 independent questions follow the 33/41/26 split: 48 People, 59 Process, 38 Business Environment |
| Review | Every question reviewed after you submit, with the explanation for each option and row-by-row feedback on matching |
| Where it differs | Matching uses a drop-down per row instead of drag-and-drop, and it is scored right only when every row is right. There are no point-and-click or pull-down items yet. The 14 multi-select, chart and matching questions per mock are our own choice, not PMI's published mix, because PMI does not publish one. |
The case studies come from a bank of 40, so repeat mocks rotate through different scenarios. Full mocks are part of the PM Mastery Pass. The free tier covers 100 practice questions. PM Mastery does not provide the 35 contact hours PMI requires to apply.

How to Use a Mock Well
- Sit it like exam day. One sitting, timer on, both breaks taken when they come. The 2026 exam day strategy covers pacing at about 80 seconds a question.
- Review before you retake. Spend at least as long on the review as on the mock itself, starting with the questions you got right for the wrong reason.
- Watch the trend, not one score. One mock is a noisy reading. Several mocks across all three domains tell you far more.
Common Questions
How many questions should a 2026 PMP mock exam have?
180, to match the real exam, with 240 minutes on the clock. PMI's 2026 Exam Content Outline sets the exam at 170 scored and 10 unscored pretest questions. A realistic mock also opens with the case-study section and locks each section after its break.
Does the 2026 PMP exam have matching questions?
Yes. PMI's 2026 Exam Content Outline lists Matching and Enhanced Matching as question types. Both appear only on the computer-based test, not on every delivery format. PMI does not say how many you will see.
How many multiple-response questions are on the 2026 PMP exam?
PMI does not publish a number. The Exam Content Outline says the exact number of items for each question type may vary by form. Multiple response is listed as available on all delivery formats, so expect to see some.
Do PMP mock exams use the real exam's question mix?
No mock can, because PMI does not publish the mix and it varies by form. A good mock includes the types PMI lists, tells you how many of each it uses, and is clear that the mix is its own choice.
